In this article I am going to provide you a simple and quick way to setup reliance data card on ubuntu hardy heron. Most of the tasks could be done with the script that I am attaching here.
1. Plugin Data Card
2. Download setup script from here. Open a terminal and run it as ” bash reliance_setup.sh “. It will ask for your data card connection number. Provide it when it does and press enter. The script will install gnome-ppp gui package, wvdial, and modify the necessary system files to setup permissions to dial the reliance connection using ppp.
3. Once set up, the script will launch gnome-ppp dialer. You need to provide following,
Username
Password (same as usrname. the connection number)
Phone Number : #777
4. Click on “Setup” option from the dialer window. From modem tab, click on “Detect” button which will automatically detect your usb modem in most cases. If not, you’ll have to choose it manually from the dropdown menu. Choose speed as 115200 from the drop down list.
5.
You could leave rest of the options as it is for now. Close the setup window and click on “Connect”. You are all ready to rock. A connection window will appear, from which you could click on “Log” to see what is happening while connection is progress.

hi,
i have tried ./setup_scriptd/reliance_setup.sh but the out shows no such directory or file exits..
October 19, 2008 at 7:36 am
Hey J Sundar,
There is some issue in you downloading the script and running it. Clearly the error msg means that either you have not downloaded it, or going to the wrong location to run it.
is it setup_scriptd or setup_scripts ?? you might need to check the path where you have put it and change to that dir , run bash . that should just work.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
I was up and running in under 2 minutes on 8.10 Ibex! And its been working perfectly for days. People like you make open source feasible for us noobies!
Only change, since it downloaded to my desktop I had to change the directory before running the bash command. I did this in terminal with “CD Desktop”. After this when I want to connect I type “gnome-ppp wvdial”. Today I right clicked on desktop and put a shortcut to this command so I dont have to enter in terminal all the time

When the dialing takes place, it is stuck forever at “waiting for prompt”. The log is as follows:
–> Ignoring malformed input line: “;Do NOT edit this file by hand!”
–> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
–> Cannot get information for serial port.
–> Initializing modem.
–> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
–> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
–> Modem initialized.
–> Sending: ATM1L3DT#777
–> Waiting for carrier.
ATM1L3DT#777
CONNECT
–> Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
Any help is appreciated

Pradeep,
Which version of Ubuntu are you using? This post is for 8.4 LTS (Hardy Heron). If you are using older versions, you might want to have a look at this one http://freedomyug.wordpress.com/2007/08/18/reliance-data-card-howto/
My guess is, the problem in your case is your modem not being detected, or kernel module is not being installed.

Hi Gourav,
thanks for you tutorial. I’ve followed it but strangely enough even if I succeed connecting with gnome-ppp (I see the time running) I cannot surf the net and under the details panel, I have no inbound nor outbound traffic.
I’ve noticed that wvdial.conf was left untouched, even if I’m admin.
Any clues what the problem could be?
thanks,
Paolo

it is asking me for the data card number.
after that it is sending a error message ” Gnome-ppp no such command found”
plz help me it is very urgent
January 22, 2009 at 3:28 am
Priyatham,
Can you be elaborate on the error?
Can you give me the error description with more details.
If its only “Gnome-ppp no such command found” , then its not present on your machine and you’ll have to install the package.
open a terminal, and give the following command,
sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
After that try to follow from where you got the error.
I guess you are using ubuntu version which is older than 8.4, and if that so please refer to my older post http://freedomyug.wordpress.com/2007/08/18/reliance-data-card-howto/

Ajay,
Can you paste the output of “lsusb” command here after connecting the modem? that could help debug further.
to run the command go to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal , and once the terminal opens, run lsusb command.

Hello gaurav.
I had the driver for kernel version 2.6-27-11 but i was trying to run wvdial on a 2.6-28-15 kernel. So I solved this problem by installing a 2.6-27-11 kernel.. and whenever I want to connect to Internet I choose 2.6-27-11 kernel and type wvdial. It connetcs .. the only hassle now being that I am using Ubuntu with an older kernel version to connect to the Internet. Is there any way by which I can get it running in the higher kernel versions
By the way . you had asked for the output for the lsusb command. This is what I get when i run in both the kernels

I need to connect Reliance netconnect broadband+. I have Huawei EC1260 datacard. Kindly let me know how should I connect it on Ubuntu
Thanks.
November 9, 2009 at 5:54 am
BNR,
Which version of Ubuntu are you using? The latest versions of ubuntu (9.04 and 9.10) most likely support all data cards in India by default.
Can you give me out put of these commands.
Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal and type in the following commands. paste me the output.
1. cat /etc/issue
2. lsusb
Also if you could, connect the data card , and immediately run this command in terminal
dmesg | tail -n 20
and send me the outputs.
Thanks
Gourav
